چکیده
This study analyses the response of compacted bentonites upon hydration based on a coupled hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic framework. As an alternative to multi-porosity interpretation, framework was selected experimental evidence adsorbed water behaviour in and volumetric at saturated states, apparently independent its initial state. Based these premises, retention model formulated using explicit distinction between free water, enabling postulation properties depending In order effectively account for transition unsaturated state, that can occur wide range suctions, stress–strain constitutive equations are written terms effective stress degree saturation The mathematical formulation implemented finite element code used simulate interpret MX-80 bentonite different forms during several paths, including loading unloading cycles after saturation. A good agreement with results obtained consistent set parameters describing state behaviour. typical non-linear swelling pressure development interpreted through two-way coupling compressibility. possible high suctions states explain potential full hydration. Overall, this offers new perspectives role interactions

The argillite extracted from Bure site (France) is proposed, after being crushed and com-pacted, as a possible sealing and backfill material in the geological high-level radioactive waste disposal. In this study, the effects of the grain size distribution and the microstruc-ture on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the compacted crushed argillite have been investigated. The volume change proper...

Results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of heat and moisture movement in unsaturated MX-80 bentonite are presented. A thermo-hydraulic cell that allows measurement of transient temperatures and facilitates the determination of pseudo-transients of moisture content, dry density and chemical composition has been used to perform thermal gradient tests. Results of a number of tests...

Many countries intend to use compacted bentonite as a barrier in their deep geological repositories for nuclear waste. In order to describe and predict hydraulic conductivity or radionuclide transport through the bentonite barrier, fundamental understanding of the microstructure of compacted bentonite is needed. This study examined the interlayer swelling and overall microstructure of Wyoming B...
